There are many beautiful ancient monuments in Alicante stemming from a vibrant culture and a rich history. This includes the 15th century San Nicolas cathedral which was built in Renaissance style. Close by, there is the impressive 15th century Santa Faz monastery that can be easily accessible within 5km from the city. This ancient stone building is impressive with its most ornate decorations which are the structure’s highlight and signature.

The Casa de La Asegurada is a 15th century civil building which is considered the oldest in town having been transformed into a museum to showcase contemporary art pieces. A host of unique Stone Age exhibits can be seen at the museum such as the highly esteemed ancient statue of Dama de Cabezo.

Another ancient building from the 18th century is the Palacio Gravina which houses many works of arts from the Museum of Gravina. Here, numerous regional paintings and interesting ancient sculptures dating back to the 16th century are on display.

The lifestyle at Alicante has proven to be simple yet vibrant. There is no lack of activity at Alicante with the daily local market, Mercado Central. This modern 20th century market is well constructed in contemporary style to befit the new era. However, this building is unique with the ancient town walls as part of its structure as it caters to the daily marketing needs of the locals.


The locals at Alicante would also be delighted to check out Lonja de Pescado; this 20th century fish market is a hive of activity with its double function as an exhibition center.
